Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity
Relinquishing unwanted offerings can be viewed as somewhat rude – except if it's done for a noble purpose.
A Charitable Sale
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 gifts given to her by world leaders while abroad. The diverse haul could include items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
These items, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Rome-based auction firm. The specific date remains to be announced, although the aim is to hold the auction by year's end, with the revenue donated to a selection of charitable causes.
Palazzo Chigi Treasures
The presents are currently stored in a secure area on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore planning to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust over a long period.
The full gift list is yet to be officially released, but partial details were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The query focused on whether a legal value limit was being followed. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.
A Global Assortment of Presents
Notable gifts feature:
- A scarf from the leader of Albania, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
- Artworks from Moldova.
- An assortment including makeup, a board, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," observers have said.
Political Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from her own political sphere, with winning over foreign leaders and positioning Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.
This unique auction highlights a unconventional way to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that build up during a leader's tenure.
