A American legislative committee probing convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has sent a letter to Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, previously Britain’s Prince Andrew, asking that he submit to an interview as part of its inquiry into Epstein’s illegal activities.

In a communication released on Thursday, a lawmaker, the senior Democrat on the House oversight panel, requested that King Charles III’s sibling help with its investigation.

The written appeal to provide testimony follows a week after Mountbatten Windsor was stripped of his royal title and opted to surrender his leased home in Windsor.

Files and Allegations

Mountbatten Windsor’s name is listed in records and travel logs secured from Epstein’s estate and made public by the committee. He has also been charged by one of Epstein’s victims, the late Virginia Giuffre, of misconduct.

“The panel will probe accusations of wrongdoing by Mountbatten Windsor, and will seek information on Epstein’s operations, network, and associates based on the men’s longstanding and well-documented friendship,” the committee said in a press release.

It demanded details from Mountbatten Windsor on specifics of his friendship with Epstein, who took his own life in a New York detention facility in 2019. Andrew has consistently vehemently rejected any misconduct.

Details of the Request

“It has been documented that your association with Mr Epstein started in 1999 and that you stayed connected through and after his 2008 sentencing for procuring minors for sex work,” the letter said.

It stated further: “It has also been alleged that you journeyed with Epstein to his New York home, the Queen’s estate at Balmoral, and to Mr Epstein’s personal island in the US Virgin Islands, where you have been charged of assaulting young girls. This intimate friendship with Mr Epstein, coupled with the freshly uncovered 2011 electronic correspondence in which you wrote to him ‘we are in this together’, further supports our belief that you may have key insights about the crimes committed by Mr Epstein and his partners in crime.”

A notification regarding the letter said it was co-signed by 13 other Democrats on the committee and requests a response by 20 November.

Earlier Comments and Cooperation

The letter arrives a week after another Democrat on the committee told: “Andrew should be summoned to give evidence before the oversight committee. The citizens has the right to know who was assaulting women and young girls alongside Epstein.”

However, the congressman does not have the authority to legally require the ex-royal and Congress itself cannot force testimony from a overseas individual.

In 2020, US authorities said that Mountbatten Windsor failed to respond to US requests for an discussion. The then US attorney for the southern district of New York said that prosecutors and the FBI had approached Andrew’s legal team to follow up on his previous pledge that he was “ready to help any relevant law enforcement agency”.

“It’s just for people to know whether Prince Andrew has fulfilled with that assurance,” the attorney said, adding that to date he had “given no cooperation”.

Appeals for Accountability

The congressman said in a comment that “wealthy and powerful men have evaded justice for far too long. Now, former Prince Andrew has the chance to be honest and secure justice for the victims. Oversight Democrats will not halt fighting for accountability and openness for those affected of Epstein and his gang of accomplices.”

Another supporter, a Virginia Democrat, said that after listening to testimony to the committee from Epstein’s survivors, as well as public reporting of released files, “it is crucial that Andrew cooperates with the ongoing probe. If he is innocent, then he can clear his name.”

The lawmaker stated further: “And if not, our investigation will reveal that, and the affected individuals will receive much-delayed accountability. The monarchy’s actions stripping Andrew of his honors suggest there is additional to this case.”

The letter was issued on the same day the British king officially revoked Mountbatten Windsor of his HRH style.
