Correctional Facilities Won't Be Fixed Immediately, Minister States, while Law Enforcement Search For Two Men Mistakenly Released
Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick has described the circumstances as a "total shambles," commenting earlier today.
Speaking during a broadcast interview, he referenced remarks made by the justice minister after a recent inmate discharge, stating that the minister would implement more robust checks.
"It took six days for the corrections department supposedly to even become aware this occurred" and notify the authorities, the shadow official says, "leaving them a week behind in the manhunt to locate him."
The shadow minister criticises Lammy's handling during recent PMQs and accuses him of a "complete dereliction of duty."
Speaking about mistaken inmate discharges in broader terms, Jenrick underlines that "each accidental discharge [...] is unforgivable."
He admits there were similar incidents under the previous Conservative government, but claims the number "has increased dramatically" under Labour.
Calling for additional correctional facilities to be constructed, he adds: "What the British people want to see now are adequate checks implemented."
"This represents a specific administrative failure by the justice department overseen by David Lammy," Jenrick concludes.
