Rob Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial candidates under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was sacked on Sunday after the squad's 10-match winless beginning to the top-flight campaign.
And both candidates - both of who have historic associations to the club - are among the options to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.
The manager is currently at another club, which would pose a possible hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town manager - who played more than 100 of games for Wolves during his time as a player - is said to be a strong candidate for the position.
The 42-year-old is said to have support from the Wolves board as they start the search of hiring a fresh head coach.
Gary O'Neil is additionally emerging as a unexpected candidate, although he would be a shock appointment considering he was released by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is out of work meaning Wolves would not be required to provide any compensation.
