The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
