Strong winter gusts brought walls down upon fragile tents sheltering people displaced by war in Gaza, killing at least 4 individuals. These deaths highlights the perilous living conditions that continue after more than two years of devastating airstrikes and severe lack of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Offers No Relief from Severe Weather

While a truce has been in effect from October, aid groups state that residents broadly lack the sufficient housing necessary to survive recurring winter storms.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which took in the victims, said on this week that the dead include two women, a young female, and a man.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry stated on the same day that a 12-month-old infant died of hypothermia during the night.

"The world has enabled us to experience loss of life in every possible way," stated Bassel Hamouda after the funeral. "It’s true the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, 3 members of a single household — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his son's wife — were killed when an eight-metre tall wall collapsed onto their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. At least five others were hurt in the event.

Family members on that day started clearing the debris that had buried their family and reconstructing the temporary homes for survivors.

Humanitarian Efforts and Continuing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were distributing shelter kits, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothing as well as food and sanitation supplies across Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of the population live in improvised tents because their houses were reduced to ruins over the course of the war. Aid groups contend an insufficient amount of building supplies are entering Gaza under the truce.

Casualty Numbers Since the Ceasefire

The Gaza health ministry, part of the administration, says more than four hundred and forty individuals have been fatally shot by gunfire and their remains taken to hospitals since the ceasefire went into effect. The authority keeps comprehensive casualty records that are considered generally reliable by UN agencies and independent experts.

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, stated on that day that at least one hundred minors below eighteen years old – sixty males and forty females – had been killed after the ceasefire began due to military operations, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, artillery fire and use of live ammunition. Those figures, he explained, represented cases where sufficient information had been compiled to warrant documentation, but the total toll is believed to be greater. He noted that hundreds of minors had been injured.

"Although 'explosions and shootings have decreased' under the truce, they have not ceased," Elder informed reporters at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "Therefore what the world now terms calm would be considered a catastrophe anywhere else," he said.

Third Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s population of more than 2 million people has been fighting to keep the cold weather and bad weather at bay while enduring lack of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier temporary housing, which is badly required during the winter months. It’s the 3rd cold season since the war involving the state and Hamas began on 7 October 2023, when militants attacked southern Israel and killed approximately 1,200 individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.
