Israelis observe two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have come together throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over an end to the war in Gaza.
The assault led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are considered reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the leader added on that day.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas delegations met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the proposal.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the discussions revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have still not deliver any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are striving to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.
Key Issues in Discussions
- A lasting ceasefire
- The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for assistance provision
- Post-war administration of the area
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "No location feels like home now and until each abducted person come back not a single person will be secure."
"When we see everyone home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.
Near the prime minister's home in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.
Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do any agreement necessary for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately the majority of Israelis prefer the conflict to end in exchange for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the site of Nova festival, mourners gathered to pay their respects.
From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli shelling persisted.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the western district, Rimal and Nasr areas and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"As the night comes, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.
"My family are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are lying together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will return to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had taken in the corpses of several people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of the city reported two more dead people had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the southern area, medical staff said.
