Nicolas Sarkozy plans a personal account in the coming weeks called Diary of a Prisoner, chronicling his time endured behind bars.

The announcement emerged shortly after the ex-leader gained freedom as he contests the guilty verdict on charges of criminal conspiracy in a case to acquire political financing linked to the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he reflects in a preview, indicating the memoir is more about his reflections during seclusion instead of wider commentary regarding the overcrowded and struggling French prison system.

“Quiet is absent, not present in La Santé, where one hears a lot to hear,” he continues. “The racket unfortunately never stops. Yet, similar to barren lands, one’s inner world grows stronger in prison.”

Court Appearance: Sharing the Struggle

At his release request hearing, the former leader participated via screen from a room in prison, depicting prison life as gruelling. He stated to the judge: “I want to pay tribute those working in the jail, showing great humanity, and who helped make this difficult experience tolerable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a hardship forced upon me. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It leaves a mark on any prisoner as it’s exhausting.”

Unprecedented Situation

The former president, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, set a precedent as past president from the EU and the first leader since WWII from France to experience jail.

Before entering jail he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.

His incarceration began in late October following the judiciary imposed five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in connection with efforts to acquire political donations during his election campaign.
