More than twenty Olympic medallists, mentors and additional international athletes have put their names to a statement urging a end to the death penalty of a champion boxer and instructor, who is sentenced to die in the country.

Escalating Worldwide Condemnation

During growing global condemnation over the country's expanding employment of executions as a means of suppression, the powerfully expressed statement denounces the authorities's decision to uphold the capital punishment of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The athlete, 30, from the city in north-east Iran, was arrested for taking part in national uprisings in 2019 and accused of supporting an opposition group. He has endured half a decade in incarceration, where he has been abused and kept in seclusion.

“Sport is intended to promote faith, unity, and courage,” the signatories expressed. “The capital punishment of a winner for his political views is a clear violation on these values and a admonition to any competitor who attempts to express dissent.

Record of Killing Athletes

The letter pointed out that Vafaei Sani’s situation was not unique and highlighted the country's record of sentencing to death competitors for their beliefs, for example a national team leader, captain of the national football team, and Fourouzan Abdi, skipper of the national women’s volleyball team. In the year 2020, an athlete, a young national competitor, was also executed.

Additional supporters to the statement include a sailing champion, who led the first women's squad in a round-the-world competition and was the pioneering lady to receive a renowned nautical honor; the ex- captain of the national squad an athlete; and a sports figure, who was in the country's selection for the 1978 World Cup.

Detention and Flawed Legal Process

The boxer was detained in early 2020. The accusations against him entailed “causing deterioration on Earth through fire-setting and damage of public property”. His ruling has been annulled on two occasions but on the fourth of October it was confirmed on the latest review. His court case was criticized as “grossly unfair” by advocates and bodies.

Appeal to UN

The appeal to halt the athlete's capital punishment comes after a previous appeal to the United Nations official for rights, backed by over 100 human rights experts and organizations, urging intervention to stop the athlete’s death.

Capital Punishment Escalation

Based on data, there is an “execution crisis in Iran, which has attained alarming levels”. In the year 2023, officials put to death at least over 850 people – a forty-eight percent increase on 2022. Last year, statistics showed nine hundred seventy-two deaths, constituting the highest number since the year 2015. Over hundreds of people have been executed so far in 2025.
