Our King, Our Priest, Our Feudal Lord – How AI Is Taking Us Back to the Dark Ages.
This past summer, I found myself navigating in gridlocked traffic on the sweltering streets of Marseille. At a crossing, my friend in the passenger seat suggested a right turn toward a famous spot for bouillabaisse. However, the digital guide on my phone instructed us to continue straight. Weary and overheated, I heeded the algorithm's advice. Minutes later, we were stranded at a roadwork site.
A minor incident, maybe. But one that captures a central question of our time, where technology touches nearly every facet of our lives: who gets our trust more – other people and our own intuition, or the algorithm?
A Call for Intellectual Maturity and Our Modern Relapse
The renowned German philosopher Immanuel Kant once defined the Enlightenment as "man's release from its self-imposed immaturity." This state, he argued, "is the incapacity to use one's personal reason without direction from an external source." For ages, that guiding "other" for society was frequently the priest, the monarch, or the landowner – figures claiming to speak for God's voice. To explain natural events like volcanic eruptions, people looked for explanations in theology. In organizing the social world, from economics to love, faith served as the main compass.
“Sapere aude!” or “Dare to use your reason!”
Kant maintained that humans had the ability to think rationally. They simply lacked the boldness to employ it. With upheavals in the 18th century, a new dawn emerged: logic would replace superstition, and the human mind, freed from dogma, would become the engine of advancement and a more ethical world.
Today, two and a half centuries later, one might question if we are quietly regressing into a form of intellectual immaturity. An app suggesting a direction is merely the start. Artificial intelligence risks becoming our new "other" – a unseen overseer that influences our decisions and behaviors. We are in danger of ceding the historically earned autonomy to think independently – and this time, not to gods or kings, but to computer programs.
The Rapid Rise and Subtle Dangers of AI Dependence
ChatGPT debuted a mere three years ago, and already a global survey found that an vast number of people had used AI in the previous six months. Whether deciding on ending a relationship or choosing a candidate, individuals are increasingly turning to algorithms for guidance. Research suggests a large majority of user queries concern non-work topics. Even more striking than our reliance on AI for advice is what occurs when we allow it speak for us. Composition is now one of the most common uses for tools like ChatGPT, just behind everyday tasks. The late American author Joan Didion famously said, “I write entirely to find out what I am thinking.” What transpires when we stop composing? Do we cease discovering?
Alarmingly, some evidence suggests the outcome may be affirmative. A study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology used electroencephalography to track the mental engagement of essay writers who had could use AI, traditional search engines, or no aids. Those who could use AI displayed the lowest cognitive engagement and had difficulty accurately recalling their own work. Maybe most troubling was that after a few months, individuals in the AI group grew progressively lazier, copying entire blocks of text.
“Inertia and fear,” Kant wrote, “are the reasons why so great a proportion of men … stay in perpetual nonage.”
Of course, AI's attraction lies in its efficiency. It saves time, minimizes work and – critically – offers a new method to offload accountability. In his 1941 book, Escape from Freedom, the German psychoanalyst Erich Fromm argued that the appeal of authoritarianism could be understood by a preference to surrender autonomy in for the sake of the comforting security of obedience. AI offers a modern avenue for surrendering the weight of having to think and choose.
The Black Box Problem: Trust Without Understanding
AI's greatest allure is its ability to accomplish things beyond human capability – sifting through oceans of data at unprecedented speed. Sitting in the car in Marseille, this was, after all, why I opted to believe the app over my companion (a decision she interpreted as an affront). With knowledge of all the data, surely the app had superior insight – or so I thought.
The core issue is that AI operates as a black box. It generates answers, but without necessarily deepening human comprehension. We cannot fully grasp the process behind its conclusions – even its programmers acknowledge the opacity. Nor can we verify its reasoning against transparent standards. So when we follow AI's advice, we are not being guided by reason. We are back in the domain of faith. In dubio pro machina: when in doubt, trust the machine – that could be our 21st-century credo.
Harnessing Without Eroding: The Critical Balance
AI can be a formidable ally for mankind in rational inquiry. It can help medical research, free us from tedious tasks, or handle taxes – duties that are repetitive and offer little satisfaction. This is beneficial. But Kant and his peers did not advocate for reason over faith just so humans could optimize chores or have extra free time. Independent thought was not merely about efficiency – it was a discipline of freedom and human emancipation.
Human thought is often chaotic and error-prone, but it forces us to debate, to doubt, to test ideas – and to acknowledge the limits of our own knowledge. It builds self-reliance, both individually and as a society. For Kant, the use of reason was never only about acquiring knowledge; it was about empowering people to become agents of their own destinies, and to oppose domination. It was about creating a moral community based on the common foundation of reason and debate, rather than unquestioning acceptance.
With all the advantages AI brings, the paramount challenge is this: how can we harness its potential of advanced capability without eroding human reasoning, the cornerstone of the Enlightenment and of free societies themselves? That may be one of the central dilemmas of our time. It is a question we would do well not to outsource to the machine.
