Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was buried under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of space.

The group of women also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
