The top legal official in Texas Ken Paxton is suing the producers of acetaminophen, claiming the companies concealed potential risks that the pain reliever posed to pediatric cognitive development.

This legal action follows four weeks after President Donald Trump publicized an unverified association between using acetaminophen - also known as paracetamol - during pregnancy and autism in offspring.

The attorney general is filing suit against Johnson & Johnson, which previously sold the medication, the exclusive pain medication approved for pregnant women, and the current manufacturer, which now manufacturers it.

In a official comment, he claimed they "betrayed America by profiting off of discomfort and pushing pills without regard for the risks."

The manufacturer states there is insufficient reliable data linking acetaminophen to autism spectrum disorder.

"These companies lied for decades, deliberately risking numerous people to increase profits," the attorney general, a Republican, stated.

Kenvue commented that it was "deeply concerned by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the safety of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the welfare of US mothers and children."

On its official site, the company also stated it had "regularly reviewed the applicable studies and there is lacking reliable evidence that indicates a established connection between taking acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Organizations acting on behalf of physicians and healthcare providers share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has declared paracetamol - the main ingredient in Tylenol - is a restricted selection for expectant mothers to treat pain and elevated temperature, which can create significant medical dangers if left untreated.

"In over twenty years of research on the utilization of paracetamol in gestation, zero credible investigations has successfully concluded that the use of paracetamol in any trimester of gestation results in neurological conditions in children," the group commented.

The court filing references latest statements from the Trump administration in arguing the drug is allegedly unsafe.

Last month, the former president caused concern from medical authorities when he told pregnant women to "fight like hell" not to consume acetaminophen when ill.

Federal regulators then published an announcement that medical professionals should contemplate reducing the usage of Tylenol, while also mentioning that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism in children has not been established.

Health Secretary RFK Jr, who manages the FDA, had promised in spring to conduct "a massive testing and research effort" that would identify the cause of autism in a limited time.

But specialists advised that discovering a sole reason of autism spectrum disorder - thought by researchers to be the result of a complicated interplay of inherited and external influences - would be difficult.

Autism spectrum disorder is a form of permanent neurological difference and condition that affects how people encounter and engage with the environment, and is recognized using doctors' observations.

In his legal document, Paxton - a Trump ally who is seeking federal office - alleges the manufacturer and Johnson & Johnson "intentionally overlooked and attempted to silence the science" around paracetamol and autism.

This legal action seeks to make the firms "remove any marketing or advertising" that asserts Tylenol is safe for pregnant women.

The court case mirrors the complaints of a group of parents of minors with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD who filed suit against the manufacturers of acetaminophen in recently.

Judicial authorities threw out the case, stating investigations from the plaintiffs' authorities was inconclusive.
