This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life free from concern.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the holiday season,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Every time, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
